Laughing Owl Greens – Featured small business of the month

Our featured small business of the month for October 2017 is a environmentally conscious, family oriented company located in Flower Mound, TX (landscape company in a city named Flower Mound? – they’ve got to be good!). Laughing Owl Greens LLC is a landscape design and install company that focuses on sustainable practices in the north Texas markets. While those of us here in the Midwest are getting ready for our last mow of the season and a good winter-proofing of our equipment and flower beds, owner of Laughing Owl Greens, Travis Knoop, is already gearing up for a busy Spring 2018 by enabling customers to reserve flower bed installs and lawn services now. We took a few moments to catch up with Travis about his experience as a small business owner and we quickly discovered why this company is already booking business months in advance: they’re passionate about what they do, they’re reliable, and customers love them! Here are some insights from Travis on what it’s like to be an entrepreneur and what makes Laughing Owl Greens unique.

1. How long have you been in the landscaping industry and how/why did you get started in it?

I have been involved in the landscape/horticulture industry for the last 12 years and looking forward to many more decades to come! I started in the landscape industry because it’s a new challenge everyday. I Love sitting down with my customers and listening to their ideas then turning them into a reality.

2. What prompted you to start your own business?

I have always had a strong desire to own my own business. I started a partnership at the young age of 14 with my Dad on some acreage on a farm that he owned. That is where I learned the basic fundamentals of owning a business and what it took to be successful. I went to college and received an Agronomy/Horticulture degree and then turned it into my Landscape Company that I own now.

3. What’s the most rewarding part of being a small business owner?

There is definitely flexibility in your schedule and it’s most rewarding to get to share your talents with your local community. Being a small business owner means developing a reputation that can make you successful or sink you. I have always put quality and integrity as my two core principles of my business. This has helped solidify my position in my community.

4. What’s the most challenging part of being a small business owner?

Having to wear all the hats all the time. You have to be ready to answer the call while working on the project, paying the bills, keeping up with the inventories, payroll, marketing etc…. the list goes on and on. Most small business owners wish there was an additional 15 hours in a day to get everything done. 🙂

5. What’s one piece of advice you can offer to others considering starting their own business?

Never give up, frustrations are a daily occurrence that will eventually weed out those who aren’t strong enough, leaving you as the top contender. Never sell yourself short or lower your value. Be honest and work hard.
